Silvies Valley Ranch

A working cattle ranch with reversible golf and goat caddies — the frontier original.

The place

Deep in eastern Oregon's high desert, hours from the nearest city, Silvies Valley Ranch is a 140,000-acre working cattle and goat ranch that decided to build some of the most original golf in America. The Hankins and Craddock courses share a single stretch of meadow and rimrock and reverse direction on alternating days — play both and you have played the same land two completely different ways. McVeigh's Gauntlet, a cliff-goat of a challenge course, comes with trained caddie goats carrying the bag. Cabins, ranch dinners and a spa round out a stay that is half golf trip, half frontier retreat.

Where you crash

The resort

Silvies Valley Ranch cabins & lodge

Timber cabins and lodge rooms around the meadow — ranch-raised dinners, a spa, and stars with zero light pollution.

◆ The private house

The Ranch House

Book a cluster of the ranch's multi-bedroom cabins so the crew shares porches and a firepit — off-ranch rentals do not meaningfully exist out here, and that is the point.

Why it wins

Nothing else in golf is like it: a remote eastern-Oregon cattle ranch where the two main courses share fairways and reverse direction daily, a cliffside challenge course employs actual pack goats as caddies, and the crew has a high-desert valley essentially to itself.

Booking notes

The ranch is all-inclusive-leaning — book lodging, meals and golf as one reservation and confirm the course-reversal calendar so the crew sees both routings. Fly into Boise or Bend, then drive; it is remote by design.
