Dornoch, Scotland

Royal Dornoch & the Highlands

The far-north pilgrimage — Royal Dornoch's plateau greens and daylight that won't quit.

The place

Dornoch sits an hour north of Inverness, far enough that only real golfers make the trip — which is exactly the point. Royal Dornoch's Championship links, where Donald Ross learned the game before exporting it to America, runs through gorse-lit duneland with plateau greens that repel the almost-good shot; it lives in every world top ten and feels like a secret anyway. Around it: Brora, where sheep still graze James Braid's fairways; sporty Golspie and Tain; and Cabot Highlands' Castle Stuart on the drive up. Small-town hospitality, whisky country, and golf until the light finally gives out.

Where you crash

The resort

Links House at Royal Dornoch

A boutique country-house hotel steps from Dornoch's first tee — whisky library, rod room, and dinners that outclass the latitude.

◆ The private house

The Highland Lodge

A stone lodge in the hills outside Dornoch — drying room, peat fire, and a dram with the sunset over the firth. Sleeps the whole crew under one roof.

The 5-day plan

  1. 1

Land & play the way north

AM Into Inverness by midday; vans loaded, coffee strong.

PM Castle Stuart on the drive up — the firth-side modern classic — then check in at Dornoch.

  2. 2

    Royal Dornoch

AM The Championship links, first crack — watch the plateau greens shrug off good shots.

PM The Struie course for gluttons or a beach walk at Embo; seafood and a dram in the village.

  3. 3

    Brora & Golspie

AM North to Brora — sheep, wires and Braid at his happiest.

PM Golspie's quick loop or the Clynelish distillery next door; fish and chips on the way home.

  4. 4

    Dornoch — the Cup

AM Back to the Championship links for the team match — now you know where not to miss.

PM Trophy dinner at Links House; an evening nine for the unbeaten, because the sun's still up.

  5. 5

    Firth-side nine & home

AM A dawn nine at Tain or breakfast beneath the cathedral, then the hour south to INV.

Why it wins

The purest links week in Scotland: a permanent world-top-ten course with no grandstands and no crowds, a supporting cast of charming Highland links, and midsummer daylight past 11pm that makes 36-hole days free.

Booking notes

Fly to Inverness (INV) via London or Amsterdam — overnight from the East Coast, landing by midday — then drive an hour north over the firths. A rental van is the norm; the roads are easy and empty. Royal Dornoch releases visitor times about a year out and summer sells clean out, so book the marquee rounds before the flights; Brora, Golspie and Tain take bookings direct. In June and July it stays light past 11pm — evening loops cost nothing but sleep.
