The place
Two hours from Birmingham in the north Georgia foothills, Barnsley is a 3,000-acre estate built around the romantic ruins of an 1840s Italianate manor — now a storybook village of cottages, gardens and gravel lanes. The General, Jim Fazio's course through the property's hills and streams, brings legitimate golf; the Beretta Shooting Grounds, horseback rides, fly fishing and a saloon fill every non-golf hour. It is the retreat-style pick: take over a run of cottages, golf every morning, shoot clays every afternoon, and end each night at the outdoor fireplaces.
